Lars Lürig (born September 19, 1975 in Mülheim an der Ruhr ) is a gold medalist at the Paralympics and a former world record holder in swimming. Lürig was born with dysmelia .

Sports

Lürig participated in the 1992 Paralympics in Barcelona , 1996 in Atlanta and 2000 in Sydney . In 1996 he won gold and the world record in the 200 m freestyle class S5 and silver in the 50 m and 100 m freestyle. After the games he was awarded the highest honor for German athletes, the silver laurel leaf . In addition, he received the sports plaque and was 1996 disabled athlete of the year in North Rhine-Westphalia. In 1994 Lürig became world champion in the 200 m freestyle in Valletta and remained undefeated over this distance until the Paralympics in 2000. In 1998 he became four-time world champion (50 m, 100 m, 200 m freestyle, 4 × 50 m individual medley) in Christchurch , New Zealand.

At the 2000 Games in Sydney, the winning streak broke over his parade route and he ended his active sports career with a bronze medal.

Further career

Following his athletic career, Lürig decided to become a teacher. His thesis he wrote on the subject: The debate on emissions trading in the European Union . Since 2006 he has been teaching English and social sciences at the Maria-Sibylla-Merian Gymnasium in Telgte . He is currently working at the Luisenschule Mülheim.
