The 8th World Swimming Championships took place from January 8th to 17th, 1998 in the open-air pool in Perth and were organized by the World Swimming Federation, FINA .
Right at the beginning of the world championships, a doping scandal overshadowed the competitions. Some members of the Chinese national team were found illegal performance-enhancing substances upon arrival at Perth Airport and sent home immediately.
The most successful male swimmer was the Australian Michael Klim , who won the 200 m freestyle, 100 m butterfly, the 4 × 200 m freestyle and the 4 × 100 m individual relay relay and thus a total of four gold medals and two silver medals over the 100 m Freestyle and the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay and a bronze medal in the 50 m freestyle.
The most successful swimmer was the American Jenny Thompson . She was world champion four times and won a total of five medals.
Ian Thorpe became the youngest world champion when he won the 400m freestyle at the age of 15 years and three months.
