Career
Swimming career
Wouda grew up in Uden , North Brabant and became a member of the local swimming club 'De Zeester'.
Overall, Wouda took part in three Summer Olympics from 1992 to 2000. In 1992 in Barcelona he was the only male member of the Dutch Olympic swimming team. He finished the 200 meter freestyle in 18th, the 400 meter medley as 19th and over the 200 meter medley he landed in 22nd place.
After the 1992 Games, he moved to the United States to study and train at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor .
After his return to the Netherlands, two years later, he qualified for the 1996 Summer Olympics , where he failed in fourth over 200 meters and fifth in 400 meters, each just barely winning his first Olympic medal. He also reached the finals with the Dutch 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay and was seventh together with Mark van der Zijden , Martin van der Spoel and Pieter van den Hoogenband .
In February 1997 he twice improved the 400 meter short course world record at swimming meetings in Gelsenkirchen and Paris .
The 1998 swimming world championships in Perth were Wouda's career highlight when he became world champion over the 200 meter medley and thus the first ever male Dutch swimming world champion. He also secured the silver medal over the 400 meter individual medal and ultimately only had to admit defeat by his former training partner in Michigan, the American Tom Dolan . With the Dutch 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay , he was able to win the silver medal behind the outstanding Australian relay.
In 1999 at the Short Course World Championships in Hong Kong , he became world champion in a new European record time with the Dutch 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay . In addition, he secured over 400 meters individual medals and with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay the silver and over 200 meters individual medals the bronze medal.
Only a few months later, at the European Swimming Championships in Istanbul in 1999 , he was three times European champion. Among other things, he improved the European record to 03: 16.27 minutes when he won the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay.
At the following Summer Olympics in Sydney in 2000 he was able to win the bronze medal and thus his only Olympic medal together with Martijn Zuijdweg , Johan Kenkhuis and Pieter van den Hoogenband, the Dutch 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay. With the Dutch 4 × 100 meter relay, he only just failed to win another medal in fourth. On his parade route, the 200 meter medley, he finished fifth. He also started on the 100 meter chest course, missed the final in seventh place and finished in 13th place.
Coaching career
From 2004 he was a Dutch junior coach. In 2006 he took up the post of assistant coach to Jacco Verhaeren , his former coach after his time in the USA, in Eindhoven. There he trains, among other things, Olympic champion and open water world champion Maarten van der Weijden or Olympic champion, world and European champion Hinkelien Schreuder .
