Robbery Affair 2016

Lochte made negative headlines when he claimed to have been attacked during the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio, which after an official investigation turned out to be a lie. Lochte and his teammates Jimmy Feigen, Gunnar Bentz and Jack Conger had rioted at a gas station and, when confronted with it, claimed to have been mugged. In fact, they were prevented from escaping by a security guard with a gun. After paying a small sum for the damage done, they were allowed to leave. Conger and Bentz admitted to the police that they had been persuaded by Lochte to support the robbery story in order to cover up their wrongdoing. Ryan Lochte made a statement on Twitter regretting his behavior but still insisting that he had been mugged.

Because of this incident, his long-time sponsor Speedo and the companies Ralph Lauren , Airweave and Syneron Candela declared that they would no longer support him. It is estimated that Lochte's financial loss could be well over a million dollars. He has also been charged with false reports in Brazil. The US Swimming Association and the US National Olympic Committee banned Lochte for ten months. In addition, he had to repay his bonus for winning the gold medal with the relay, does not receive any national funding during these ten months and has to do 20 hours of community service. He was also not allowed to attend the Olympic team reception at the White House. Nevertheless, he announced that he wanted to participate in the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Doping ban 2018

On May 24, 2018, Lochte posted a photo showing him undergoing an intravenous transfusion. According to the statutes of the American Anti-Doping Agency ( USADA ), such infusions are only permitted for athletes in certain situations that did not exist in this case. The USADA announced on July 23, 2018 that no prohibited doping substance had been used in the infusion and that Lochte was retroactively suspended for 14 months until July 2019 because of this doping violation.
