Mitchell James Larkin (born July 9, 1993 in Buderim , Queensland ) is an Australian back swimmer . At the 2015 World Championships, he won the gold medal over 100 and 200 meters back.

Career

Mitch Larkin first took part in World Championships in 2011 and was eliminated in the 200 m backseat and 200 and 400 m medley in the heats. Then he focused on the backstroke. In 2012 he was Australian champion in the 200 m back and qualified for this route for the Olympic Games in London , where he reached the final and was eighth. In 2013 he also took part in the 200 m backseat World Championships in Barcelona , but did not get beyond the heat.

In 2014 he won the gold medal in the 200 m backseat at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow as well as three silver medals in the 50 m backseat, 100 m backseat and with the Australian medley relay. At the end of 2014 he won his first world title at the short course world championships in Doha over 100 m back and also took bronze over 50 m. At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan , he won gold over 100 m backstroke in front of Camille Lacourt and Matt Grevers , after having broken the Oceania record twice in the preliminary and semi-finals. He then improved the Oceania record twice over the 200 m back and won gold in front of Radosław Kawęcki and Jewgeni Rylow . Over the 50 m back he finished 4th. He also won silver behind the US team with the Australian relay team over 4 × 100 m medley. In November 2015 he set a new short course world record over 200 m back in 1: 45.63 minutes .

Mitch Larkin is multiple Australian champion and trains under Michael Bohl at St Peters Western Swimming Club in Brisbane . He is studying at the Queensland University of Technology in Brisbane.
