Dirk Richter (1984)

Dirk Richter (born September 12, 1964 in Cottbus ) is a former German swimmer of the SC Einheit Dresden , who competed for the GDR and later for the all-German team.

Originally he wanted to be a soccer player, but his parents decided that he should become a swimmer because of the lower risk of injury. He made his first international appearances in 1981 at the European Championships , where he only won the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 meter relay.

He won his first major title at the 1982 World Championships in Guayaquil , when he became world champion over 100 meters back in a European record time.

In 1983 he was also able to become European champion on the same route. He won the silver medal with the GDR 4 × 200 meter freestyle relay and the bronze medal with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle and medley relay.

No further individual titles were added later, one reason for this was the GDR's Olympic boycott at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . Only with the relay over 4 × 200 meters freestyle he became world champion in Madrid in 1986 and with the individual relay relay over 4 × 100 meters he became European champion in 1987 .

In 1985 at the European Championships Richter won three silver medals over 100 meters back and over 4 × 100 meters freestyle, or 4 × 100 meters medley.

At the 1986 World Championships he was also runner-up in the 100 meter back and with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay. In 1987, in addition to winning the title with the freestyle relay, he was also able to win the bronze medal in the 100 meter freestyle.

At the following Olympic Games in 1988 and 1992 he was able to win bronze with the 4 × 100-meter freestyle relay.

As with the Olympic Games in Barcelona, he swam for the all-German team at the European Championships in Athens in 1991 . There he was three times European runner-up over 100 meters and 200 meters back, as well as with the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay.

Richter ended his swimming career in 1992. In the GDR he was awarded the Patriotic Order of Merit several times . In 1984 he received this gold medal. He was also honored in 1986 with the Star of Friendship of Nations in silver.
