The 16th European Swimming Championships took place in Rome from August 22nd to 27th, 1983 and were organized by the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN).

The 1983 European Swimming Championships included competitions in swimming , art and tower diving , synchronized swimming and the men's water polo tournament. The competitions took place in the Foro Italico .
