Kathrin Zimmermann (born December 22, 1966 in Gera ) is a former German swimmer .

Career

Zimmermann, who is the daughter of swimmer Heidi Eisenschmidt , celebrated her first international success at the 1983 European Swimming Championships in Rome. There she won the silver medal over the 200 meters back. In June of the same year she won the GDR swimming championships in 1983 in Gera with the individual relay relay and won the silver medal over the 200 meters. At the 35th GDR swimming championships in Magdeburg the following year , Zimmermann secured the title over 200 meters in front of Kristin Otto from Leipzig . Her time of 2: 10.97 minutes was also the world's best performance of the year and brought her second place in the world best list behind her compatriot Cornelia Sirch.

At the FINA World Championships in 1986 she traveled as a member of the strong East German team. She won bronze over 200 meters after having won silver over 100 meters. In the final 4 × 100 meter relay, Zimmermann won the gold medal together with Sylvia Gerasch , Kornelia Greßler and Kristin Otto .

At the GDR indoor swimming championships in 1986 in Rostock , Zimmermann won the silver medal over 100 meters behind Cornelia Sirch . In the same year she won gold over 200 meters back and silver over 100 meters at the GDR swimming championships in 1986 in Berlin . A year later she secured the title over 100 meters at the GDR championships in 1987 in Erfurt . At the European Swimming Championships in Strasbourg in 1987 , she won silver over 200 meters and bronze over 100 meters in the swimming competitions dominated by the GDR team.

At the Olympic Summer Games in Seoul in 1988 , she secured the silver medal in her favorite discipline of 200 meters back. In the following summer, the Karl Marx townsperson won silver over the 200 meters at the GDR swimming championships in 1988 in Potsdam . Over the 100 meters she won the bronze medal together with Birte Weigang .
