Hugo Stammann (born May 12, 1831 in Hamburg ; † November 1, 1909 there ) was a German architect. He shaped the Hamburg cityscape at the end of the 19th century with numerous buildings; He gained particular fame as a co-builder of the Hamburg City Hall .

Life

The son of the renowned Hamburg architect Franz Georg Stammann completed an apprenticeship as a carpenter and, after studying at the Berlin Building Academy, initially worked for the Prussian building officer August Soller . After Soller's death he returned to Hamburg, worked for some time in his father's office and then went via France to the USA, where he dealt with urban planning in newly founded cities for several years. In 1864 he returned to Hamburg and founded his own office, from 1873 together with his partner Gustav Zinnow , who had once started as a draftsman for Stammann's father.

In the course of the building boom after the founding of the Reich in 1871, Stammann and Zinnow built numerous residential and commercial buildings (including for the Norddeutsche Bank on Neuer Wall ), but also public contracts such as the renovation and expansion of the Thalia Theater built by Stammann senior , the Zollvereinsniederlage from 1869/70 or the new building of the Heiligengeist Hospital in Eilbek in 1883.

As early as 1876, Stamman & Zinnow had joined forces with other architects to form the so-called Rathausbaumeisterbund , based on whose designs the new town hall was built from 1886. Stammann & Zinnow designed the halls for the Hamburg citizenship .

In the area of ​​the Althamburg Memorial Cemetery of the Ohlsdorf Cemetery , the architect's collective grave commemorates Hugo Stammann. Stammannstrasse in Hamburg's Jarrestadt was named after him in 1928 .
