The 17th European Swimming Championships took place in Sofia from August 4 to August 11, 1985 and were organized by the Ligue Européenne de Natation (LEN).

The 1985 European Swimming Championships included competitions in swimming , art and tower diving , synchronized swimming and the two water polo tournaments. The women's water polo tournament was held for the first time in 1985 and took place between August 12 and 18, 1985 in Oslo ( Norway ).
