Benny Leo Nielsen (born March 26, 1966 in Aalborg ) is a former Danish swimmer .

Career

Nielsen, who started for Aalborg Svømmeklub , won the silver medal in the 200 meter butterfly at the 1985 European Swimming Championships in Sofia . The following year he won bronze in this discipline at the 1986 World Swimming Championships in Madrid .

In Strasbourg , Nielsen was able to secure the silver medal over 200 meters and the bronze medal over 100 meters butterfly at the European Swimming Championships in 1987 .

At the Summer Olympics in Seoul in 1988 he won the silver medal over the 200 meter butterfly behind the German Michael Groß and ahead of the Australian Anthony Mosse . Over the 100 meters butterfly he missed the final and reached third place in the B final, which meant 11th place in the end. With the 4 × 100 meter relay relay, which also included Lars Sørensen , Christian Toft and Franz Mortensen , he failed in the fourth heat and was in the end on rank 14. With the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay he reached tenth place.

In total, Nielsen secured 40 Danish championship titles.

After his active career, Nielsen completed his training with the police in 1999 and has worked as a police officer ever since. He was also involved in the Danmarks Idrætsforbund . From 1997 to 2005 he took on various functions there. From 2001 to 2005 he was a member of the board of the association. Before that, he had headed the elite sports committee for four years and was involved in the school sports department. In his free time he works as a swimming trainer and looks after professional and young swimmers. At the 2014 European Swimming Championships he was an advisor to his compatriot Viktor Bromer .

Nielsen has two daughters. Mie Østergaard Nielsen is also a successful swimmer and started her first Summer Olympics in London at the age of 15 .
