Mie Østergaard Nielsen is the daughter of Benny Nielsen , who won silver in the 200 m butterfly at the 1988 Olympic Games , and Lone Jensen , who was also a swimmer and, for example, took part in the 1978 World Swimming Championships. She lives in Nørresundby and is trained by Eyleifur Jóhannesson.

Mie Nielsen won international medals for the first time in 2011 when she won two gold medals and one silver and one bronze medal at the European Junior Championships in Belgrade . In the same year she made her debut at the European Short Course Championships in the senior sector and won gold and silver with the Danish relay teams over 4 × 50 m medley and freestyle as well as individual bronze over 100 m back and medley. In 2012 she represented her country at the age of 15 at the Olympic Games in London , where she achieved 6th and 7th place respectively with the Danish freestyle and medley relays. In her individual starts over 100 m and 200 m back she did not get beyond the heats. In addition, she competed in the short course world championships for the first time in 2012 and won a complete set of medals with gold over 4 × 100 m individual medley, silver over 100 m back and bronze over 4 × 100 m freestyle.

In 2013 she won gold over 100 m backseat at the European Short Course Championships in Herning, Denmark, as well as in world record time with the relay over 4 × 50 m freestyle. In the 4 × 50 m individual medley, she and the Danish quartet initially took second place behind the relay from Russia , which, however, was subsequently stripped of gold after Julija Jefimova's positive doping test . At the 2014 European Swimming Championships in Berlin , Nielsen won her first medals in the senior category on the long track. At the same time as Katinka Hosszú she became European champion over 100 m backseat and also won gold in the relay over 4 × 100 m medley in a new European record time. In addition, she was third over 50 m back. At the end of 2014 she won gold over 4 × 50 m medley with a new world record and over 4 × 100 m medley as well as bronze over 4 × 50 m freestyle at the short course World Cup in Doha . She missed the 100 m back as fifth and with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay as fourth the medal ranks.

At the 2015 World Championships in Kazan , Nielsen won the bronze medal over 100 m backseat behind Australians Emily Seebohm and Madison Wilson and improved her own Danish record in the semifinals. Over 50 m back she was able to beat her own national record in the semifinals and finished fifth in the final. She finished fifth with the Danish relay over 4 × 100 m individual medley. In 2016 Nielsen again won gold over 100 m back at the European Championships in London and prevailed against Katinka Hosszú, setting a new European Championship record in 58.73 seconds. She also won silver over 50 m back and was fifth with the relay over 4 × 100 m freestyle.
