Athletic career

Jeanette Ottesen began her swimming career at the age of twelve at Lyngby Svømmeklub and at the age of 13 she took part in her first international competition - the 2001 European Youth Olympic Festival in Murcia . At the 2004 European Swimming Championships in Madrid , she took fourth place over 50 meters butterfly and at the next event in 2006 in Budapest she only achieved the ninth-fastest time in the same discipline. The relay over 4 × 100 meter positions, in which she took over the butterfly section, swam to eighth place.

One year later, Ottesen had already won two wins at the Summer Universiade in Bangkok , but she first swam into the public eye at the 2008 European Short Course Championships in Rijeka , Croatia , when she triumphed over the 100 meter butterfly with Championship Record and three others Won individual medals.

Ottesen celebrated the greatest success of her career up until then on July 29, 2011 when she won the gold medal in the prestigious 100 meter freestyle at the World Swimming Championships in Shanghai - together with the Belarusian Aljaxandra Herassimenja at the same time . After the two victories of her compatriot Lotte Friis , this was only the third Danish world championship in swimming. In December of the same year she secured a total of six out of 14 Danish medals at the European Short Course Championships in Szczecin, Poland . Because of these achievements, she was named Swimmer of the Year 2011 and Sportswoman of the Year 2011 in Denmark . Over the next four years, numerous other medals and titles followed at all major championships, all of them winning the 100 meter butterfly at the 2013 World Championships in Barcelona .

In 2004 in Athens , 2008 in Beijing and 2012 in London , she also represented her home country at the Summer Olympic Games . Her best placement was a fifth place in the finals of the 100 meter freestyle at the Beijing National Swimming Center .
