Andrea Gyarmati

Andrea Gyarmati [ ˈɒndrɛɒ ˈɟɒrmɒti ] (born May 15, 1954 in Budapest ) is a former Hungarian swimmer .

She comes from a family who loves swimming. Her mother Éva Székely was Olympic champion in the 100 m breaststroke in 1952 , and her father Dezső Gyarmati won gold medals at the Olympic Games three times with the Hungarian water polo team .

Andrea Gyarmati was the best European swimmer in the butterfly and back position at the end of the 1960s and the beginning of the 1970s and was European champion over 100 m butterfly and 200 m back at the European Championships in 1970 . At the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich , she won over 100 m butterfly, started as the favorite, "only" bronze and over 100 m back the silver medal.

From 1968 to 1972 she was elected Hungary's Sportswoman of the Year and in 1995 she was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame .

Andrea Gyarmati is married to the 1968 Olympic kayak champion Mihály Hesz .
