Ulrike Richter-Schmidt , b. Richter, (born June 17, 1959 in Görlitz ) is a former German swimmer who competed for the SC Einheit Dresden and the GDR .

Career

She achieved her greatest successes in the backstroke . As a 14-year-old she swam a world record (2: 20.51 min) in the 100 meters back in 1973 . At the European Championships in 1974 , she won the title over 100 meters and 200 meters back as well as the GDR's 4 × 100 meter relay in new world record times .

At the 1975 World Championships in Cali , she was also able to win gold over 100 meters back. At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , she was Olympic champion over 100 meters and 200 meters back and with the 4 × 100 meter relay relay.

In 1976 she received the Patriotic Order of Merit in Gold for her achievements at the Summer Olympics ; in 1974 she was awarded this silver medal. In 1983 she was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame . After the admission, team officials confessed to performance-enhancing doping, which is why their entry in the Hall of Fame today has a corresponding footnote.

Resignation and private matters

In 1977 she resigned from competitive sports. It is with the former East German Oberliga - football player Volker Schmidt married.
