Barward Tafelmaker also called Barward Taffelmacker (* 1487 in Braunschweig ; † 1565 ibid) was a German builder and brewer .

life and work

The Tafelmaker, who comes from a Braunschweig brewery family, took mathematics and geometry lessons at the University of Erfurt from 1503. He then worked in Cologne, Berlin and Leipzig, among others. In Hildesheim he created the market fountain dated 1540.

The towers of St. Andrew

In the years 1518 to 1532, Tafelmaker built the two late Gothic upper floors of the south tower of Braunschweig's Andreaskirche . In the report he has received, he describes the impact of the Reformation on the end of the construction work in 1532: “Just when we had cleared a new quarry on the Elme in order to also build the north tower [...] Dr. To write to Luther that the good works are not meritorious but sinful. Now nobody wanted to add any more, we had to leave the building standing [...]. ”The north tower remained unfinished. It was not until 1544 that Tafelmaker continued the work with the erection of a tent top on the now 122 m high south tower. This made it the third tallest tower in Central Europe for a few years until the top fell due to storm damage in 1551. The spire was rebuilt in 1559 with a total height of now 108 m.

Tafelmaker's house in Braunschweig was under the Andreaskirche tower on the corner of Weberstrasse. Tafelmaker died wealthy and respected in 1565. The Tafelmakerweg in Braunschweig is named after him.

The Braunschweig water arts

In his hometown he built five of the seven water arts (pumping stations) that served the city's water supply, especially the breweries.

"[...] In any case, this existed until the citizen and brewer Barward Tafelmaker, who had made a name for himself around the city of Braunschweig, in 1527 seq. With the application of the arts, which drive the Oker water through pumping stations in the various parts of the city for the use of the citizens, - put an end to this evil. "

These were created in the Sack (1525), in the Neustadt (1529), in the Hagen (1540) and in the old town (1541 to 1565) and led water through wooden pipes ( piping ) into the cellars of the houses. These facilities, financed by seven pipe fraternities, survived into the 19th century.
