The old town was one of five independent soft formations of today's Braunschweig inner city.

The old town existed until it was united with the other four Weichbilden ( Altewiek , Hagen , Neustadt and Sack ) in 1671, the year in which Braunschweig lost its independence as a result of the Guelph occupation.

history

Together with Altewiek, the old town forms the oldest area of Braunschweig. As early as the 11th century, there was a merchant's settlement on the western bank of the Oker in the area of today's Kohlmarkt , it was built around the year 1000. Today it is known as the Kohlmarktsiedlung. The Ulricikirche on the Kohlmarkt was consecrated in 1036 (demolished in 1544 due to dilapidation). Around 1050 the old town was expanded along the Breite Straße. After 1100, the old town market was first settled. Probably around 1117 the old town received city rights . In 1158 the Michaeliskirche was built. After 1160 the old town was fortified . In 1198 the construction of the old town parish church St. Martini began. The Old Town Council was formed around 1200. In 1253 the construction of the west wing of the new old town hall on the old town market began, the north wing followed around 1450.

In 1269 the old town, the new town and the town of Hagen agreed to administer some of their affairs in a joint council. Apart from that, the individual communities remained autonomous and each retained their own town hall. Around 1290 a major fire raged in the old town. The Old Town Gewandhaus was first mentioned in 1303 and in 1354 the old town's scales were built on the Kohlmarkt. In 1408 the old town market fountain was set up on the old town market.

In 1671 the soft picture councils were abolished, and thus the independent soft picture old town ceased to exist.
