Birgitreiber (born February 26, 1960 in Oschatz ) is a former swimmer who competed for the SC Einheit Dresden and the GDR . She is multiple European champion, world record holder and won three medals at the Olympic Games.

Career

She began her international career in 1975 at the age of 15 when she won the world title in a world record time over 200 meters back at the 1975 World Swimming Championships in Cali (Colombia). Also in these championships she was runner-up in the 100-meter back course.

At the 1976 Olympic Games in Montreal , she won silver over 100 meters and 200 meters back, behind Ulrike Richter , for which she was awarded the Bronze Patriotic Order of Merit . In the same year she also improved the world record over 400 meters medley and 200 meters back. In the 1977 European Aquatics Championships in Swedish Jönköping it was over 100 meters and 200 meters backstroke as well as the 4 × 100 meter freestyle relay European champion.

In 1978 she was again three times vice world champion, before she ended her career after the bronze medal at the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow over 200 meters back. In 1981 she received the Patriotic Order of Merit in silver for her repeated medal.

After her sports career, she became a dentist .

GDR doping

In the course of the GDR doping process and the related research and archival processing of the practices of GDR doctors and sports officials , among other things, doping plan specifications by Birgitreiber were found.
