She had the misfortune in her career that her strongest time as a swimmer was in the time when there were no Olympic Games because of the Second World War and she could not win an Olympic medal. Only at the European Championships in 1938 did she have the opportunity to win an international title, which she also took advantage of by winning the 100 m back .
Her world record of 1: 10.9 minutes over 100 m backrest from September 22, 1939 lasted until the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome , when Lynn Burke broke it. This period of 21 years is the longest time that a world record has ever been held in swimming. In 1971 she was inducted into the international swimming sport hall of fame .
