Katinka Hosszú ( ˈkɒtinkɒ ˈhosːuː , born May 3, 1989 in Pécs ) is a Hungarian swimmer . She swims in the medley , butterfly and back disciplines , and freestyle in relay competitions . In 2016 she was three times Olympic champion and in 2013, 2015, 2017 and 2019 world champion in the 200 and 400 meter medley, and in 2009 in the 400 meter. It holds the long-track world records over both layers and the short-track world records in the back and layer tracks over 100 and 200 meters. At the Olympic Games, World and European Championships she won 93 medals up to 2019, 89 of them in individual disciplines.

Career

At the European Short Course Championships in 2012 , Hosszú won the competitions in the 200 m butterfly and 200 m medley within a few minutes in exactly the same time of 2: 05.78 minutes.

From August 7th to 11th, 2013, Hosszú set six world records on the multi-layer courses at the World Cup events in Eindhoven and Berlin. For this she received around 80,000 euros in prize money and prizes. A year later, from August 27 to September 1, 2014, at the World Cups in Doha and Dubai, she improved these world records another five times.

At the 2014 Short Course World Championships in Doha , she won eight medals more than any other swimmer in this competition before. In her victories in the 100 and 200 m backseat as well as the 100 and 200 m medley, she also set world records.

At the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro , Hosszú won the gold medal in the 400 m medley in a new world record time of 4: 26.36 minutes. She won further gold medals in the 200 m medley and 100 m back as well as a silver medal in the 200 m back. In July 2017 she won gold medals in the 200 m and 400 m medley, a silver medal in the 200 m back and a bronze medal in the 200 m butterfly at the World Championships in Budapest . Hosszú was elected to UEPS Europe's Sportswoman of the Year 2016 and in 2009 and from 2013 to 2017 as Sportswoman of the Year in Hungary . In 2013, 2014 and 2016 she was Europe's swimmer of the year .

In May 2018, she separated from her husband and trainer Shane Tusup. At the European Championships in August, for which she was preparing in the USA, she swam only two individual courses, where she won over the 200 m individualized course. Then Árpád Petrov was her new coach.

In December 2018, together with the two Americans Tom Shields and Michael Andrew and the Ukrainian entrepreneur Kostjantyn Hryhoryschyn, she filed a lawsuit against the world swimming federation FINA in order to break FINA's monopoly on hosting international swimming competitions. In 2019 the racing series of the International Swimming League was held for the first time .

In December 2019, Hosszú won her 90th international medal at the European Short Course Championships with her victory over 400 m individual medals, her 60th gold medal and her 50th medal in short course championships.
