Donna Elizabeth de Varona (born April 26, 1947 in San Diego ) is a former American swimmer .

She took part in the Olympic Games in 1960 and 1964. At the Olympic Games in Tokyo in 1964 she was over 400 m medley and Olympic champion with the 4 × 100 m freestyle relay. After these games, she retired and became a sports commentator for ABC . She was one of the first women to hold such a position at a television station. In 1969 she was inducted into the International Swimming Hall of Fame . 1999 she was awarded the United States Sports Academy in Daphne the honorary doctorate .

  1. The very first TV sports commentator was the Austrian figure skater Eva Pawlik , who was hired by ORF in 1963 to broadcast the European Championship and World Cup. In 1964 she was employed as a sports commentator at the Olympic Winter Games in Innsbruck (see "They tell you who wins.
