Stephanie Louise Rice (born June 17, 1988 in Brisbane , Queensland ) is an Australian swimmer.

Career

Rice trains under Michael Bohl at the St Peters Western Swimming Club . At the Commonwealth Games 2006 she surprisingly won both the 200 m individual medley, where she undercut her own record by 1.19 seconds in the final, and gold over the 400 m of the same discipline. At the Swimming World Championships in Melbourne in 2007 , she won bronze over 200 m and 400 m medley. In both races, she increased her personal best and set new Australian records.

At the Australian qualifying competitions for the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 , she first broke the world record held by Katie Hoff in the 400 m medley by 1.43 seconds and set the new record at 4: 31.46 seconds. Then she also improved the world record of the Chinese Wu Yanyan in the 200 m medley by almost one second to 2: 08.92 seconds. At the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008 she won the gold medals in the 200 m medley and over 400 m medley, both ahead of Kirsty Coventry . With the 4 × 200 m freestyle relay she secured her third Olympic gold medal. She set new world record times in all three disciplines.

Private

Rice was in a relationship with Australian swimmer and world record holder Eamon Sullivan for two years until July 2008 .
