Dana Vollmer (born November 13, 1987 in Granbury , Texas ) is an American swimmer .

Career

Vollmer lives in Gainesville / Florida . She trains at the University of Florida , where she also studies medicine . Chronic illness can cause Vollmer's heart to suddenly stop, forcing her to carry a defibrillator with her at all times. She was invited to the US Trials for the 2000 Olympics as the youngest ever swimmer at the age of 12, but failed to qualify. Her specialty disciplines are freestyle and butterfly swimming .

At the 2012 Olympic Games in London, she won the 100 m butterfly swimming competition. With 55.98 seconds, she was the first woman to stay under 56 seconds over this distance. She also won gold with the US 200-meter freestyle and individual medley relay.
