Mary Terstegge Meagher (born October 27, 1964 in Louisville ) is a former American swimmer .

Mary T. Meagher is one of the best butterfly swimmers in swimming history. In 1979, when she was only 14, she set her first world records . The child prodigy from Kentucky was the favorite for the 1980 Olympic Games in Moscow , but the US Olympic boycott prevented the first Olympic victories. She made up for this at the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles . She won the 100 m and 200 m butterfly superiorly and secured her third gold medal with the American 4 × 100 m individual medal. At the Olympic Games in Seoul in 1988 she was able to win a bronze medal in the 200 m butterfly.

The great world records in the early 1980s will be remembered. In August 1981, she set the 100 m butterfly with 57.93 seconds and the 200 m butterfly with 2: 05.96 minutes, two world records that were compared to the long jump world record of Bob Beamon and seemed to last forever. It was not until 1999 that Jenny Thompson broke the 100 m record and Susie O'Neill broke the 200 m record on May 17, 2000 in the following year. In the all-time ranking over this distance, however, it is still very high. After O'Neill, only the current world record holder Jessicah Schipper and Otylia Jędrzejczak were faster.

In 1993 she was inducted into the international swimming pool 's hall of fame . Mary T. Meagher married speed skater Mike Plant after her career and now lives in Peachtree City , Georgia . One of her sisters is the politician Anne Northup .
