Anne Meagher Northup (born January 22, 1948 in Louisville , Kentucky ) is an American politician . Between 1997 and 2007 she represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Anne Meagher, her maiden name, attended the Sacred Heart Academy in Louisville until 1966 and then Saint Mary's College until 1970 . During this time she married Woody Northup, with whom she would have six children. Her younger sister Mary was at the Olympic Games of 1984 in Los Angeles Gold Medal winner at the swimming competitions.

Anne Northup became a member of the Republican Party . She was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives from 1986 to 1997 . In the 1996 congressional election , she was elected to the United States House of Representatives in Washington, DC , in the third constituency of Kentucky , where she succeeded Democrat Mike Ward on January 3, 1997 . After four re-elections, she was able to complete five legislative terms in Congress until January 3, 2007 . There she was a member of the grant committee . During her time as Congresswoman, the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 , the Iraq war and the military operation in Afghanistan fell .

In the 2006 election, Northup was defeated by the Democrat John Yarmuth , against whom she also ran unsuccessfully in 2008. In 2007, she failed in her party's primary election for the Kentucky gubernatorial election . In July 2009, Anne Northup was appointed to the Consumer Protection Commission by President Barack Obama .
