J. Campbell Cantrill

James Campbell Cantrill (born July 9, 1870 in Georgetown , Kentucky , †  September 2, 1923 in Louisville , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1909 and 1923 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Campbell Cantrill Was the son of James E. Cantrill (1839-1908), who was Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky from 1879 to 1883 . He attended public schools in his home country as well as Georgetown College . He then studied at the University of Virginia in Charlottesville . After his training, Cantrill worked in agriculture until his death. Politically, he became a member of the Democratic Party . In 1895 he was its chairman in Scott County . Cantrill was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1897 and 1899 . Between 1901 and 1905 he was a member of the State Senate . In 1904 he was nominated for the congressional elections. Cantrill turned down this nomination. That same year he was a delegate to the Democratic National Convention in St. Louis , where Alton B. Parker was nominated as a presidential candidate. In 1908 Cantrill became president of the Society of Equity Farmers in Kentucky.

In the congressional elections of 1908 he was elected to the US House of Representatives in Washington, DC in the seventh constituency of his state , where he succeeded William P. Kimball on March 4, 1909 . After seven re-elections, he could remain in Congress until his death in 1923 . During this time the First World War fell . In addition, the 16th , 17th , 18th and 19th amendments to the Constitution were ratified between 1913 and 1920 . Between 1915 and 1919 Cantrill was chairman of the Committee on Industrial Arts and Expositions .

In 1923 he was nominated by his party as a candidate for the Kentucky gubernatorial election. Cantrill died, however, during the following election campaign on September 2, 1923. His parliamentary mandate fell to Joseph W. Morris after a special election .
