Wayne Edward "Ed" Whitfield (born May 25, 1943 in Hopkinsville , Kentucky ) is an American politician . From 1995 to 2016 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives .

Career

Ed Whitfield attended Madisonville High School until 1961 . He then studied until 1965 at the University of Kentucky in Lexington . He then graduated from Wesley Theological Seminary and American University in Washington, DC After studying law at the University of Kentucky and being admitted to the bar in 1969, he began to work in this profession. From 1967 to 1973 Whitfield was also a member of the United States Army's reserves . He was also a businessman in the private sector. From 1991 to 1993 he was an advisor to Edward Philbin , chairman of the Interstate Commerce Commission .

Whitlfield initially joined the Democratic Party . Between 1973 and 1975 he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives . In the 1994 congressional elections , however, he was elected as a Republican in the first constituency of Kentucky in the US House of Representatives in Washington, where he succeeded the previously defeated Democrat Tom Barlow on January 3, 1995 . After he was confirmed in the following congressional elections, Whitfield was able to exercise his mandate until his resignation on September 6, 2016. He was a member of the Energy and Trade Committee and three of its sub-committees. Within the party, he belonged to the rather moderate Republican Main Street Partnership .

Whitfield advocates military issues as well as coal and nuclear power plants. He is himself a shareholder in the oil industry. Ed Whitfield is married. His wife, Constance, was a former Secretary of State in the US Department of the Interior .

At the end of September 2015, Whitfield announced that he would not apply again in the November 2016 election and proposed his colleague Michael Pape as his successor. On August 31, 2016, Whitfield announced his early retirement on September 6, 2016. This was also related to the fact that an investigation into ethical misconduct had been initiated against him. Whitfield is said to have given his lobbyist wife advantages. A little later he announced his entry into a lobby company based in Washington. With the resignation, a special election for the remainder of the term of office until January 2017 will be necessary, which will be held at the same time as the regular election. Whitfield's associate Pape was defeated in the Republican primary by Kentucky Agriculture Commissioner James Comer , who then met Democrat Sam Gaskins. In the elections, Comer prevailed against Gaskins and was Whitfield's successor as Congressman.
