Garrett Lee Withers (born June 21, 1884 in Webster County , Kentucky , †  April 30, 1953 in Bethesda , Maryland ) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Kentucky in both chambers of Congress .

Garrett Withers was born on a farm in Kentucky. After attending normal school and studying law, he was admitted to the bar in 1908. From 1911 to 1953 he served as a trial attorney in Webster County. During this time he held various other public offices; so he was an administrative clerk at the County Court of Webster County (1910-1912), senior clerk at the same court (1913-1917), member of the Kentucky Highway Commission (1932-1936), arbitrator in bankruptcy cases (1941-1945) and head of the Kentucky Highway Department (1947-1949).

When Alben W. Barkley resigned his Senate mandate on January 20, 1949 to become Vice President of the United States , Garrett Withers was appointed as his successor in Congress. He stayed there until November 26, 1950; he was not nominated for the election to this Senate seat.

After he was a member of the Kentucky House of Representatives in 1951 , Withers won a by-election to the US House of Representatives on August 2, 1952 , which had become necessary due to the death of Democratic MP John A. Whitaker . He also decided on re-election. However, Garrett Withers died during his second term on April 30, 1953 at Bethesda Naval Hospital .
