Robert Humphreys (born August 20, 1893 in Fulgham , Hickman County , Kentucky , †  December 31, 1977 in Frankfort , Kentucky) was an American politician ( Democratic Party ) who represented the state of Kentucky in the US Senate .

Life

After attending school, Humphreys first studied at the University of Wisconsin before fighting in Europe in World War I and retiring from the army as first sergeant in 1919 . He then worked as a pharmacist in Mayfield and later in Frankfort.

In 1920 Robert Humphreys was elected to the Kentucky House of Representatives, to which he served for a year. From 1932 to 1936 he was a member of the State Senate , where he served as pro tempore President in 1934 . From 1936 he was a member of the state government of Kentucky as Highway Commissioner; he held this office until 1940. He also served in the army during World War II : from 1943 to 1945 he was a captain in the medical corps.

From 1955 to 1956, Humphreys was again Kentucky Highway Commissioner before he accepted the appointment to US Senator. In Washington he succeeded the former US Vice President Alben W. Barkley , who died on April 30, 1956. Robert Humphreys served in the Senate from June 21 to November 6, 1956 and did not run for re-election. He returned to Kentucky and started working as a pharmacist again.
