Walter Darlington “Dee” Huddleston (born April 15, 1926 in Burkesville , Cumberland County , Kentucky , † October 16, 2018 in Warsaw , Gallatin County , Kentucky) was an American politician . Between 1973 and 1985 he represented the state of Kentucky in the US Senate .

Career

Walter Huddleston attended public schools in his home country. In 1949 he graduated from the University of Kentucky . In between he was a soldier in the United States Army from 1944 to 1946 during the final stages of World War II . He belonged to a tank unit that was deployed on the European theater of war. From 1949 to 1972 he worked in the radio industry, where he made it to manager. Politically, he joined the Democratic Party . Between 1966 and 1972 he was a member of the Kentucky State Senate .

In the elections of 1972 Walter Huddleston was elected as his party's candidate to the US Senate, where he succeeded John Sherman Cooper on January 3, 1973 as Class 2 Senator . After re-election in 1978, he was able to exercise his mandate until January 3, 1985. In the 1984 elections he lost 49.5% of the vote to Mitch McConnell , who got 49.9%.

After leaving the Senate, Huddleston moved to Elizabethtown , Kentucky. Until 2012 he was chairman of the First Financial Service Corporation . Since 1947 he was married to Martha Jean Pearce, who died in 2003.
