John Burton Thompson

John Burton Thompson (born December 14, 1810 in Mercer County , Kentucky , †  January 7, 1874 in Harrodsburg , Kentucky) was an American politician who represented the state of Kentucky in both chambers of Congress .

Life

Born near Harrodsburg, John Burton Thompson graduated from high school before studying law , being admitted to the bar and practicing as a lawyer in his hometown. He worked as a Commonwealth's Attorney , a designation that corresponds to the District Attorney of other states in Kentucky .

From 1829 to 1833 Thompson was a member of the Kentucky Senate , and in 1835 and 1837 he was a member of the State House of Representatives .

After the death of Congressman Simeon H. Anderson on August 11, 1840, John Thompson, then a member of the Whigs , was elected to succeed him in the US House of Representatives. He stayed there after a re-election from December 7, 1840 to March 3, 1843. After a short break, he returned to Congress on March 4, 1847 for another four years.

After serving as Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky in 1852 , he entered the US Senate on March 4, 1853 . After the Whig Party collapsed, he was now a member of the American Party . His term of office ended on March 3, 1859.
