List of Lieutenant Governors of Kentucky

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The office of lieutenant governor ( Lieutenant Governor ) in the US state of Kentucky was first created by the state constitution of 1797. Until a constitutional amendment in 1992, the lieutenant governor acted as acting governor while the actual incumbent was outside the state. In addition, he was President of the State Senate , where he had the decisive vote in stalemates; this function was subsequently transferred to the newly created office of Senate President. The lieutenant governor is elected as the governor's running mate along with the governor.

As in other US states, the vice governor's office was vacant several times, either because the incumbent left office prematurely or the lieutenant governor had to take over from a governor who left early. Since the constitution of the state only provides for the appointment of the office to a popular election, the office of vice governor could not be refilled afterwards. Early elections , such as in countries and states with a parliamentary system of government , are excluded in the United States at both the federal and most state levels.
