Frank Daniel Mongiardo (born July 4, 1960 in Hazard , Perry County , Kentucky ) is an American doctor and politician of the Democratic Party and since 2007 Lieutenant Governor of Kentucky .

Life

After attending Hazard High School , Mongiardo, whose ancestors came from Italy , first studied at Transylvania University in Lexington and graduated with a Bachelor of Arts (BA). He then completed a postgraduate degree in medicine at the University of Kentucky with a Doctor of Medicine (MD) and then worked as a doctor.

Political career

He began his political career as a candidate for the Democratic Party when he became a member of the Kentucky Senate in 2001 , to which he was a member until 2007.

Election campaign against Bunning

In 2004 Mongiardo, who was also vice chairman of the Democratic Party of Kentucky in 2003, ran against Republican incumbent Jim Bunning for a seat in the US Senate for Kentucky ( Senator Class 3 ) . When it became apparent that Mongiardo had a chance, Bunning clearly misunderstood his words and tones.

The contentious controversy got out of hand when Bunning his Italian-born adversaries such described that "it is thinking of Saddam Hussein's sons remember" ( "like one of Saddam Hussein's sons."). Given the public outrage, he forced an apology.
