The University of Kentucky (colloquially UK or just Kentucky is called) is a research-intensive, public university in Lexington in the US state of Kentucky . Founded in 1865, it is the largest university in the state of Kentucky with nearly 30,000 students.

history

In 1865 John Bowman founded the Agricultural and Mechanical College of Kentucky as a land grant university . It was part of the private Kentucky University , now Transylvania University . The city donated a 21 hectare park. In 1878 the two institutions separated due to a conflict about the direction and distribution of financial resources.

The college was established for men; from 1880 women were also allowed to enroll. The first college graduate was Belle Gunn in 1888. The first female dormitory , Patterson Hall, was built in 1904 and was the first to be outside the campus area. To get to the campus, the residents of the women's dormitory had to cross a swamp (today this is where the Student Union stands ). The construction is typical of the 20th century ; its attic was designed for a ballroom .

The university was renamed State University, Lexington, Kentucky in 1908 and University of Kentucky in 1916 . During the First World War , the Reserve Officer Training Corps began training in 1916 . In 1949, Lyman T. Johnson integrated the university after he had won a master's degree through legal proceedings.

Rankings

In 2018, the University ranked in the university ranking of the news magazine US News & World Report to the 132nd place and the 60th place among the state universities.

In January 2020, the university is ranked 139th in the RePEc ranking for its academic results in the areas of finance and economics .

In 1997, the Kentucky General Assembly, headed by President Lee Todd, mandated that the UK rise to the top 20 universities in the nation by 2020. To this end, the university is continuously tightening admission requirements and is working to improve its academic faculties, among other things by investing heavily in university infrastructure. Among other things, the hospital and research programs are to be expanded.

Sports

The UK college basketball team in particular is one of the top teams in the USA. In 2012 it won the National College Basketball Championships of the NCAA ( NCAA Division I Basketball Championship ) and is currently ranked 10th in the ESPN rankings as the best college basketball team in the USA (as of the 16th week of the 2019/20 season). American basketball coach John Calipari signed a $ 32 million contract with the university in May 2009, making him the highest paid college basketball team coach in the world.

Others

The electrical engineering school was home to one of the earliest college amateur radio broadcasters in the United States (call signal W4JP); it went on the air before the First World War . Today there are two transmitters on the UK campus: 88.1 FM WRFL and radio station 91.3 WUKY .
