Humana Inc. is a publicly listed US company in the healthcare industry .

The original company was founded in 1961 under the name "Extendicare Inc." founded by Wendell Cherry and David A. Jones in Louisville. It grew to become the largest nursing home and hospital operator in the United States over the next decade . In 1974 it was renamed Humana Inc. In the 1980s, the company began offering private health insurance . Humana is also a trustee of the United Military and Veterans Service, a subdivision of the United States Department of Defense .

The company's headquarters, the so-called Humana Building in Louisville , was designed in 1985 by architect Michael Graves in the postmodern style.
