from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Hugues Claude Pissarro , also H. Claude Pissarro , Isaac Pomié , Izakku Pomie , Kurōdō Pisaro (born November 9, 1935 in Neuilly-sur-Seine , France ) is a French painter of impressionism , the abstract and the avant-garde . He comes from the artist family Pissarro .

Life

Hugues Claude is the son of the Impressionist painter Paul Émile Pissarro . In the family tradition founded by grandfather Camille Pissarro , his father often took him on painting excursions, which he undertook in the company of his numerous artist friends; a group that proved to be formative for Hugues Claude. He exhibited his work for the first time at the age of fourteen. He later studied art at the Paris universities of the École du Louvre and École normal supérieure and exhibited several times in Paris and London. He signed his work with H. Claude Pissarro .

Pissarro worked as an engraver, lithographer, publisher, landscape painter and portraitist. In 1959 the White House commissioned him to paint a portrait of the then President Dwight D. Eisenhower . His work was influenced by abstract art, the avant-garde (here especially by the support / surface trend ), minimalism and conceptual art . His pseudonyms Izakku Pomie and Kurōdō Pisaro can be assigned to this time. His impressionistic works, which are collectively referred to as “Petit Claude”, attracted worldwide attention from 1985 onwards.

From 1989 Pissarro devoted himself more to contemporary art under the pseudonym Isaac Pomié (after the maiden name of his great-grandmother Rachel Manzano-Pomié ) ; his works from this period fall under the name "Grand Claude". For his contemporary works he used large canvases, which became his trademark. He applied the colors straight from the tube. By quickly applying the colors, he achieved a thick, robust texture in his pictures, which he refined further after drying by scraping off the paint and often repeated this process. Most of his paintings were preceded by a small study in oil or mixed media.

Hugues Claude Pissarro lived in Normandy for some time. Since around 1990 he has settled in County Donegal in Northern Ireland, where he is inspired by the wild and secluded surroundings of his home. Ireland's artist-favoring tax legislation was also a decisive factor in the choice of residence.

His wife Katia (nee Marrek), whom he married in 1958, ran a gallery in Paris. The relationship resulted from three children, the art historian Joachim , the art dealer Lionel and the painter Lélia . With his second wife Corinne Puzenat he had two children, Issac Ludovic and Rachel Esther.
