Joachim Stéphane Isaac Pissarro (* 1959 in France ) is a French-American art historian . He is director of the Hunter College Galleries and Professor of Art History at Hunter College of The City University of New York . He comes from the artist family Pissarro .

Life

Joachim Pissarro's parents were the painter Hugues Claude Pissarro and the gallery owner Katia, his great-grandfather was the painter Camille Pissarro . He studied philosophy at the Sorbonne in Paris. He studied art history at the Courtauld Institute of Art in London and graduated with a Master of Philosophy . He later obtained a Ph.D. from the University of Texas at Austin. in art history. The title of his dissertation from 2001 was “Individualism and inter-subjectivity in modernism: two case studies of artistic interchanges: Camille Pissarro (1830–1903) and Paul Cézanne (1839–1906). From 1994 to 1997 Pissarro coordinated the exhibition “Matisse and Picasso: A Gentle Rivalry” (1997) at the Kimbell Art Museum , Fort Worth , Texas with guest curator Yve-Alain Bois . Exhibitions organized by Pissarro have also been shown in other national and international museums, such as "The Impressionist and the City: Pissarro's Series" (1992–1993) at the Dallas Museum of Art , Philadelphia Museum of Art and the Royal Academy of Arts in London ; “ Georges de la Tour ” (1996–1997), in collaboration with Philip Conisbee of the National Gallery of Art in Washington, DC ; and " Monet and the Mediterranean" (1997–1998) at the Kimbell Art Museum and the Brooklyn Museum of Art in New York.

From 1997 to 2000, Pissarro Seymour H. Knox, Jr. was Curator of European and Contemporary Art at Yale University Art Gallery and Associate Professor in the Department of Art History at Yale University . There he organized the exhibitions "Then and Now and Later" (1998, with Thomas Crow) with works by Dawoud Bey , Gregory Crewdson , John Currin , Ann Hamilton, Roni Horn , Abelardo Morell, Jessica Stockholder , Peter Wegner and Lisa Yuskavage; "Post-Modern Transgressions" (1999); "After looking at Chinese Rocks: Brice Marden : Work in Progress" (1999); and " Jasper John 's Recent Paintings" (2000, with Richard Field and Gary Garrels).

Pissarro has been editor- in- chief at Wildenstein Publications since 2002 . From 2003 to 2007 Pissarro was a curator for painting and sculpture at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. Here he was responsible for the exhibitions “Pioneering Modern Painting: Cézanne and Pissarro 1865–1885” (2005) and “Out of Time: A Contemporary View” (2006, together with Eva Respini). Since 2007 he has been Professor of Art History and Director of the Hunter College Galleries at Hunter College in New York.

Joachim Pissarro is married to Annabel, nee Daou. The couple have one son, Paul.
