Dawoud Bey
Dawoud Bey , born as David Edward Smikle (* 1953 in Jamaica, Queens , New York City , USA ) is an American photographer who, through his large-format color photos of adolescents and people who are very often marginalized, has been known since the 1970s got known.
Life
Smikle changed its name to Dawoud Bey in the early 1970s. He studied at the School of Visual Arts in Manhattan in New York City in 1977/1978 . In 1990, he joined the professional photography with the examination as Bachelor of Fine Arts at Empire State College of the State University of New York from. In 1993 he gained at the School of Art of Yale University the degree of MFA ( Master of Fine Arts ).
Bey now lives in Chicago , Illinois and teaches at Columbia College Chicago .
Style and themes
From the start, Bey worked in environments that included himself as an African-American . This is how his five-year project Harlem USA came into being from 1975 to 1979. The Chicago Project followed in 2003 and the Detroit Portraits in 2004 . During a scholarship stay at the Addison Gallery of American Arts in Andover, Massachusetts , he photographed students from various public and private schools to determine any differences between them. Further stays at Addison and elsewhere resulted in his exhibition Class Pictures and a publication by the Aperture Foundation .
