From April 1, 2006 to May 1, 2019, Gerhard Finckh was Museum Director of the Von der Heydt Museum and the Von der Heydt Kunsthalle Barmen in the Haus der Jugend in Wuppertal .

He has curated internationally acclaimed exhibitions such as the Renoir exhibition (2007/08), the Monet exhibition (2009/10) or the Pissaro exhibition (2014/15). Finckh's presentations on impressionism and the avant-garde of the 20th century have been voted "Exhibition of the Year" by critics several times. However, some exhibitions brought the museum so heavy losses that shortly before Finckh's term of office ended, the Museums-GmbH, which he was responsible for as managing director, was financially severely weakened.
