Sabine Fehlemann

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Sabine Fehlemann (née Storck, temporarily Kimpel; born March 3, 1941 in Gießen ; † February 6, 2008 in Dortmund ) was a German art historian . From 1985 to 2006 she was director of the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal .

Life

Sabine Storck was born as the fourth child of the Giessen professor of orthopedics Hans Storck and his wife Elisabeth. She was a sister of the cellist Klaus Storck .

From 1963 to 1967 she studied art history , philosophy , Romance studies , archeology and musicology at the University of Cologne and Munich . A scholarship enabled her to study at the Sorbonne in Paris . In 1974 she received her doctorate in Munich with a thesis on the painter and architect Anton Hallmann .

After a traineeship at the Nationalgalerie Berlin , Johannes Cladders brought her to the Städtisches Museum Abteiberg in Mönchengladbach as a research assistant and curator , where she campaigned for the new building by Hans Hollein and numerous exhibitions, especially by contemporary artists such as Sigmar Polke and Imi Knoebel realized.

In 1984 she was appointed director of the Von der Heydt Museum in Wuppertal. Here she mastered her first major task in the renovation of the museum from 1986 to 1989. She shaped the restructuring of the rooms and sent the museum's large collection on a trip around the world, which contributed immensely to the name of the house. In addition, she staged 232 temporary exhibitions , some of which were unique because of their compilations, which also attracted international interest, such as retrospectives by Max Slevogt , Egon Schiele , Max Liebermann , Wassily Kandinsky , Ilja Jefimowitsch Repin and Otto Mueller .

Fehlemann's position on the return of looted art from the National Socialists by the Wuppertal City Council in 2003 was controversial . Ultimately, it was only in 2005 that the pictures could be returned to their rightful owners.

Sabine Fehlemann was a member of the Board of Trustees culture of Dr. Werner Jackstädt Foundation (Wuppertal).

On April 1, 2006, Fehlemann handed over the management of the museum to Gerhard Finckh and retired. In 2008 Sabine Fehlemann died after a serious illness.
