Susanne Kessler (* 1955 in Wuppertal ) is a German- Italian painter , draftsman and installation artist .

Life and accomplishments

Susanne Kessler studied painting and graphics from 1975 to 1982 at the University of the Arts (UdK) in Berlin and at the Royal College of Art (RCA) in London . In 1992 she won the Paul Strecker Prize of the City of Mainz. In addition to grants and residencies, she has led more than 50 solo exhibitions and numerous group exhibitions through Europe as well as to India , Pakistan , Mali , Ethiopia , Guatemala , Iran , Latvia and the USA (Turlock / CA, Washington / DC, New York / NY, Charlottesville / VA ). In 2001/2002 she was invited to California State University, Stanislaus / USA as a visiting professor . This was followed by other teaching activities, for example at the Academy of Arts in Riga / Latvia in 2010 and at the City University of New York , NY / USA in 2011 .

Susanne Kessler is a member of the German Association of Artists . She lives in Berlin and Rome.

Susanne Kessler became known for her expansive, organic-looking installations. Primarily based on the drawing , she has been dealing with natural, living structures for many years. Some of her works are devoted to depictions of the interior, e.g. B. the structure of the human brain, its visible appearance as well as its internal complex structure is discussed. The brain is the origin for everything that arises and exists in the world, for everything that can be perceived and as the source of human consciousness. According to Kessler, it is only the limitation to one's own brain, to one's own thinking and visualization, that promotes an “I-construction” that moves away from science and into an artistic world. Often, thought fragments, including trains of thought that are constantly concerned with biological models, are integrated into a drawing system and form a multilayered fabric of overlapping patterns and poetic content. By combining scientific drawings and their own associations and ideas, her installations convey the image of an organic network. "The ramified life remains mysterious and explosive, mysterious as a cocoon ...", she once described it. At the center of her work, the principle of life is made visible as a flow of life energy, as a process of change, which also depicts the artist's work process. Series of drawings are repeatedly incorporated into installations in order to renew them from within. Spaces with graphic signs and symbols are created, some of which absorb the kinetic energy of the space. Each environment is adapted directly to the location. The starting point is the fleeting, because the wheel of life is only visible in the temporary existence. Everything begins, arises and passes. The conceptual nature of Susanne Kessler's work symbolizes the conception of evolution through constantly changing spatial conditions and the site-specific dynamics .

As a draftsman, Susanne Kessler sees herself at the intersection between current and ancient conditions, at the same distance on both sides, which are influenced again and again by location and material, but remain internally independent.
