The Festival dei Due Mondi , also known as the Spoleto Festival , is an international music, art and cultural event in Spoleto, Italy .

history

The festival was founded in 1958 by composer Gian Carlo Menotti . His son Francis Menotti was artistic director from the mid-1990s to 2007, Romolo Valli before that and Raffaello de Banfield from 1978 to 1986 . This position is currently held by the director Giorgio Ferrara. Menotti's intention from the beginning was to create a place for the meeting of the two cultures and worlds ( mondi ), the American and the European. He chose Spoleto as the setting because of its two theaters and the unique scenery of the Piazza del Duomo to show a cross-section of art, culture and spectacle that was predominantly international during the Menotti era. The participating artists and personalities belong to the world of prose, poetry, dance, puppet shows, oratorio, music, cinema and painting. In the 1980s, the medico-scientific cross-sectional event was created, at whose congresses scientists and researchers took part.

At the beginning of the third millennium there was friction over financial and administrative management. The 50th festival began on June 29, 2007, for the first time without the founder Gian Carlo Menotti, who died a few months earlier, in whose memory his opera “Maria Golovin” was performed. In autumn 2007, the Minister of Culture, Francesco Rutelli, appointed Giorgio Ferrara as artistic director.

Characteristics

The event was unique in Italy for many years and is now one of the most important national and European cultural events, characterized by the originality, exclusivity and unusualness of the contributions. The numerous locations contrast ancient and contemporary art:

  • in the Teatro Nuovo "Gian Carlo Menotti" mainly lyrical operas and prose events take place,
  • the Teatro Caio Melisso is the venue for concerts and other prose events,
  • the Teatro Romano gives ballet a home,
  • the Teatrino delle is the avant-garde, modern dance, exhibitions, installations, performances and concerts.
  • The San Nicolò Monument Complex offers conferences, performances and concerts,
  • the courtyard of the Rocca Albornoziana concerts and prose events place.
  • The Piazza del Duomo provides space for the dance marathon and gala as well as the final concert,
  • the church of Sant'Eufemia hosts night concerts of sacred music,
  • the Auditorium della Stella , inside the amphitheater, is the scene of concerts, meetings and readings,
  • the Spoletosfera for off- spectacles, conferences, recitals, art exhibitions, happenings, installations, performances and concerts,
  • the Villa Redenta is the setting for prose events , concerts and exhibitions,
  • the Sala Pegasus hosts concerts, exhibitions and installations.

The event usually extends over 17 days from the last Friday in June to the third following Sunday, on which it closes with the traditional Concerto in Piazza in front of the cathedral with important philharmonic orchestras.

The Festival dei Due Mondi was the inspiration behind two other festivals on other continents:

  • The Spoleto Festival USA (also known as Piccolo Spoleto Festival ) in Charleston , founded in 1977, and the Melbourne International Arts Festival , since 1986; both co-founded by Gian Carlo Menotti, who was artistic director for 17 and 3 years respectively. Both foreign "offshoots" are not mere copies of the Italian original.

Unique position and avant-garde

The following were involved:

Sculture nella città offered a new form of exhibition in 1962 under the direction of Giovanni Carandente. The most important sculptors in the world have been invited to Spoleto to exhibit their works not only indoors but also in the streets and squares of the city, a true open-air museum of contemporary art but within the framework of a rich historical heritage. After that, many works remained in the city, including the Teodelapio by Alexander Calder in front of the train station.

In 1978, works by the German photographer Wilhelm von Gloeden that were viewed as ambiguous or scandalous were shown for the first time.

The most important events of the late 1990s were the Extraordinary Concert by Luciano Pavarotti in 1997, the Italian exclusive performance of the Eclipse spectacle of the Teatro Equestre Zingarò by Bartabas in 1999 and the spectacle La Ruota della Fortuna (Wheel of Fortune) dei Monaci guerrieri Shaolin in program nella XLIII edizione ( 2000 ).

While the festival was almost unique in the 1960s and 70s, there has been a decline in the number of tourists visiting both the city and the festival and in the media response in recent years - probably also due to the regional and global increase similar events. In Umbria alone, six to seven smaller events take place.

Under the artistic direction of Giorgio Ferrara , there was collaboration with nationally and internationally known artists:

Documentation center

In 2010, the Monini Foundation bought the premises of the Centro di documentazione del Festival dei Due Mondi on Cathedral Square in order to house the small museum "Casa Menotti" on around 160 m², which opened in June 2011 and was operated by the Foundation in close cooperation with operated by the community and the festival foundation. This also houses the Menotti pianoforte.
