Raffaello de Banfield , actually Raphael Douglas Baron von Banfield Tripcovich (born June 2, 1922 in Newcastle-upon-Tyne , † January 7, 2008 in Rive d'Arcano near Trieste ) was a British-Italian composer.

Raffaello de Banfield was the son of the famous Austro-Hungarian naval aviator Gottfried von Banfield and Countess Maria Tripcovich from Trieste, who settled in England in 1920.
He was married to Maria delle Grazie dei Conti Brandolini d'Adda (* 1923) since December 27, 1986. The marriage remained childless; Brandolini d'Adda has three children from her first marriage to Conte Leonardo Arrivabene Valenti Gonzaga.
Life
Raffaello de Banfield attended the Swiss boarding school "Lyceum Alpinum Zuoz", the Lyceum "Dante Alighieri" in Trieste, the University of Bologna and the Conservatory "Benedetto Marcello" in Venice directed by Gian Francesco Malipiero and studied composition at the National Conservatory from 1946 to 1949 under supervision by Henri Busser at Nadia Boulanger in Paris. During these years he met Herbert von Karajan , with whom he was a lifelong friend, as well as artists such as Pablo Picasso , Jean Cocteau and Francis Poulenc . In 1949 he met the choreographer and ballet dancer Roland Petit through the painter Leonor Fini ; this became the ballet "Le combat", which premiered in London in 1949. The piece was performed 39 times between 1959 and 1973 in the choreography of Dimitrije Parlic at the Vienna State Opera . After years of traveling through Italy, France, England and the United States, where he lived for over ten years, he was director of the Teatro Giuseppe Verdi in Trieste from 1972 to 1996 , the opera house of which he extensively renovated and modernized. From 1978 to 1986 he was director of the “ Festival dei due mondi ” in Spoleto.
He received numerous honors and awards, including being a Grand Officer of the Order of Merit of the Italian Republic . In 1994 he was appointed Grand Officer of the Legion of Honor by François Mitterrand .
