The House of Language and Literature in Bonn was an institution for the promotion and presentation of literature and literary art, especially in political contexts. Until January 2008 it was located at Lennéstraße 46 in the city ​​center . The house then moved to Villa Adenauerallee 136 in the Gronau district (on the outskirts of Südstadt ).

history

The house was run by the freelance author and journalist Karin Hempel-Soos from its founding in 1994 until her death in October 2009 . She was the head of the sponsoring association "House of Language and Literature eV", which also organizes readings outside the house. After her death, various groups of literary and cultural workers from Bonn were founded, including in the social network Facebook , who spoke out in favor of maintaining and continuing the house.

In the House of Language and Literature, readings by well-known and less well-known authors, series of events and themed evenings took place at irregular intervals. Among others Cees Nooteboom , Dieter Kühn , Jurij Andruchowytsch , Andrzej Stasiuk , Erasmus Schöfer , Eckhard Henscheid , Wolfgang Kubin , Jacques Berndorf , Jaume Cabré , Katharina Hacker , Senta Berger and Rafael Chirbes were visiting.

The villa on the west side of Adenauerallee ( Bundesstrasse 9 ) was built in 1871 according to plans by the building contractor Johann Achenbach. Since July 22, 1957, it has been the headquarters of the German District Assembly , which had previously been based in Siegburg and which also acquired the property in 1961. In the course of the relocation of the seat of parliament and government , the district assembly moved to Berlin in February 2000 . Since then, the villa's offices have housed various private companies, and in 2008 the House of Language and Literature was also set up here. The villa stands as a monument under monument protection .
