Jurij Ihorovyč Andruchovyč ( Ukrainian Юрій Ігорович Андрухович ; scientific transliteration Jurij Ihorovyč Andruchovyč ; born March 13, 1960 in Stanislaw , Ukrainian SSR ) is a Ukrainian writer , poet , essayist and translator . At the beginning of the 21st century he is considered one of the most important cultural and intellectual voices in his country. Andruchowytsch's works are translated and published internationally.

Life

Born in Stanislaw in western Ukraine, today Ivano-Frankivsk, Andruchowytsch graduated from the journalistic faculty of the Lviv Polygraphic Institute in 1982 and then (1983/84) initially completed his two-year military service in the Soviet Army .

His first poems were published in literary magazines as early as 1982; In 1985, together with Wiktor Neborak and Oleksandr Irvanez, he founded the literary performance group Bu-Ba-Bu (stands for бурлеск - балаган - буфонада , translated as: burlesque, hype, buffoons ). In the same year Andruchowytsch's first volume of poetry Nebo i ploschtschi (“Heaven and Places”) was published and received a positive response from the critics. He satirically processed his army time in seven short stories and a script that the director Andrei Dontschyk used in 1991 for the film Oxygen Starvation ( Кислородное голодание ). They appeared in 1989 under the title Links, wo das Herz Beats ( Зліва, де серце: Оповідання ) and in 1994 they were partially translated into German by Anna-Halja Horbatsch and edited. The volume of stories marks the beginning of Andruchowytsch's turn to prose. In 1991 he said goodbye to poetry with the last volume of poetry Exotic Plants and Birds . From 1989 to 1991 Andruchowytsch took courses in advanced literature at the Moscow Maxim Gorky Institute . In November 1989 he went on a reading tour through several American university cities. His novels are published successfully in Ukraine and abroad, most recently in August 2008 Mystery ( Таємниця. Замість роману , 2007) in German. The first three novels took up topics of post-Soviet reality in a satirical and controversial manner: With Rekreaziji (“ Affair ”) he satirized the national renaissance in Ukraine, Moscoviada aims at Russian cultural chauvinism against the emancipation movements of earlier Soviet republics, which also has controversial reactions caused by the audience and should have been inspired by his stay in Moscow. Twelve Rings, on the other hand, is about a fictional Austrian photographer who experiences the chaotic present of Ukraine in search of his Galician roots.

In addition to his own writing, Andruchowytsch translates from German, Polish, Russian and English into Ukrainian, for example poems by Rilke and Boris Pasternak , as well as Shakespeare's Hamlet , but also poets of the American Beat Generation .

At the beginning of the new millennium, Jurij Andruchowytsch turned again to poetry - although more mature in style and freer in form than in the early poems, the poet remains experimental and playful in his poetry as usual.

In an interview with Jürg Vollmer in the spring of 2015, the writer had stated that he had not been able to write a book since the events at the Euromaidan and in the review of the book from 2016, the Small Lexicon of Cities , the NZZ explained his disappointment with "Europe" with the following statement: "On February 21, 2014 I was showered with calls [from abroad]." Awards

Juri Andruchowytsch has received national and international prizes, including the 2001 Herder Prize from the Alfred Toepfer Foundation , which recognizes cultural achievements in Eastern Europe. In 2005, Juri Andruchowytsch received the special prize for the Erich Maria Remarque Peace Prize of the City of Osnabrück and was a guest of the DAAD's Berlin artist program . In 2006 he became a member of the German Academy for Language and Poetry and received the Leipzig Book Prize for European Understanding .
