The Goethe Medal is an award that has been awarded annually since 1955 by the Goethe Institute for services to foster the German language abroad and to promote international cultural cooperation. It has been an official order of the Federal Republic of Germany since 1975 . According to Article 2 of the Statute for the award of the Goethe Medal (cf. BGBl. 2009 I p. 522, 523 ), the medal is usually awarded for “special scientific or literary, didactic, organizational services that mediate between German culture or benefit the culture of the partner countries ”. It is only given to Germans in exceptional cases. The day of the award is (since 2008) the birthday ofJohann Wolfgang von Goethe on August 28th .
