Seagull Books
Seagull Books is a publishing company founded in 1982 in the city of Calcutta in West Bengal , India by Naveen Kishore , a theater lighting designer.
Goals and development
Seagull Books began with the New Indian Playwrights series in which the works of various playwrights from the regional languages of India such as Hindi , Marathi , Gujarati , Malayalam , Kannada , Manipuri and Bengali were translated into English. Later scripts and text books for the synchronization of finished films were added. By using English as the language that connects all of India, the publishing house enabled translations to have a broad impact not only on plays and films, but also led to the inclusion of art books and texts by foreign authors who had not been represented in India until then.
In order to enable worldwide distribution at a reasonable cost, Seagull Books has a collaboration with the University of Chicago Press for foreign markets. The publisher also has its own branches in London and New York, which operate independently there. The branch's tasks include working with translators and negotiating licenses with publishers.
Publishing program
Today Seagull Books has around 350 titles by foreign authors in its inventory. Examples of German-speaking authors are Thomas Bernhard , Max Frisch , Franz Fühmann , Dietmar Dath , Dorothee Elmiger and Joseph Vogl . There are also translations of works by Cees Nooteboom , Marc Augé , Mo Yan and Abdourahman Waberi with his novel The Gate of Tears . The Indian artists represented by the publisher in English include, for example, Binode Behari Mukherjee and Gayatri Chakravorty Spivak as translators, as well as Mahasveta Devi , Utpal Dutt and Badal Sircar .
Sunandini Banerjee, who holds a degree in English and is self-taught in design, is responsible for the cover design at Seagull Books.
