Ogba Zoo

Ogba Zoo & Nature Park is a zoological nature park in Benin City , capital of Edo State in Nigeria .

The nature park was established in 1965 in a forest reserve in the Ogba district, four kilometers from the city center. In 1966 the botanical garden was laid out in the style of an arboretum for study purposes of the University of Benin using the existing trees.

In 1971 the zoological part took place while maintaining the characteristics of a nature park. The facility extends over an area of ​​land and water of around eleven hectares and is home to wild local and other animal species in the region that are affected by extinction, including primates , lions , giant tortoises, rock pythons , horse and antelope species .

The wildlife park is owned by the Edo State Government's Ministry of the Environment. Ogba Zoo and Nature Park is operated by "BENZOPA", a non-governmental organization that advocates biodiversity, conservation and eco-tourism.

By excavation work on the main road to the airport in Benin , which runs right by the zoo, it was the late afternoon of November 6, 2012 a devastating flood that put the entire Zoobereich underwater. Buildings, stables and animals were buried under the mud. While some animals escaped, others had to be tracked down and captured. All facilities were inaccessible and the zoo had to be temporarily closed. The animals, some of which were severely traumatized, required immediate and intensive veterinary care and were housed in other facilities. As the media reported, the construction company “Setraco Construction Company” promised on December 8, 2012 to pay for the damage. The renovation measures should be completed in the course of 2013.
