Meitei (also Meithei or Meiteilon ) is the predominant language in the Indian state of Manipur . It is the official language and is seen as a factor in integrating the various ethnic groups in the region. According to the 2011 census, there are almost 1.8 million native speakers of the Meitei in India, most of them in Manipur. Smaller minorities of Meitei speakers also live in the states of Assam and Tripura .

Meitei was recognized as the national language of Manipur in 1992 and recognized on a national level as one of the 22 constitutional languages (scheduled languages) of India. It is one of the Tibeto-Burmese languages and is now also taught at Indian universities.

Until the 18th century, the language was written in Meetei-Mayek using its own characters . Then the Bengali script was adopted, which is still in use today. However, there are efforts to revive the Meetei Mayek script.

In addition to Meitei, there is the Indo-Aryan language Bishnupriya Manipuri in Manipur and the neighboring areas .
