Life

Dath grew up in Schopfheim in southern Baden , where he attended the Theodor-Heuss-Gymnasium and graduated from the Freiburg Rotteck-Gymnasium . After completing his community service, he studied physics and literature in Freiburg . Since 1990 he has published literary and journalistic articles on social and pop-cultural topics in domestic and foreign newspapers and magazines , also under pseudonyms such as "David Dalek", "Dagmar Dath" or "Dieter Draht". He has also translated works by Joe R. Lansdale , Kodwo Eshun and Buddy Giovinazzo from English. As a journalist, Dath was editor-in-chief of the magazine Spex from 1998 to 2000 , from 2001 to 2007 he was the features editor of the Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung , for which he has been working again as an editor in the field of film since September 2011. The author lives in Freiburg.

Literary work

Dath's first books were published by independent publishers in the mid-1990s . Since 2005 some of his books have also been published by Suhrkamp Verlag . In 2008 his novel The Abolition of Species was shortlisted for the German Book Prize . Dath often uses autobiographical content in his novels, for example his protagonists are alliterated , like the author, “David Dalek” or “Martin Mahr”, come from small towns in Baden and work in newspaper or magazine editorial offices. In 2009 the website litradio.net put a 35-part complete reading of the almost 1000-page novel Forever in Honey on the Internet, which the author and Andreas Platthaus had given in the Frankfurt Literaturhaus . Dath's works have been translated into Greek and English , among others .

Socio-political classification

Dath takes a communist-Marxist stance. In 2008, for example, he appeared in Alexander Kluge's Nachrichten aus der ideological antiquity , a cinematic discussion of Karl Marx 's capital , as a conversation partner and expert. In January 2009 he discussed the “future of Marxism” with Philipp Oehmke in Spiegel magazine and when asked whether he was in favor of the “elimination of the capitalist system”, he replied: “Absolutely.” Then Dath hopes for “a system of communalism” , division of labor, democratic production based on the most advanced technology ”. He updates Leninist theories, for example in Honey Forever , where he makes explicit reference to Lenin's What to Do? takes. After the essay Machine Winter was published , Mathias Bröckers mockingly referred to the author as "Lenin 2.0". In The Implex , the Dath authored with Barbara Kirchner, Dath argues that social progress on the elimination of domination depends: the literary criticism took the work on ungracious, then Alexander Cammann interfered in time , for example on a "saucy Checkerpose" and "Kalashnikov-like self-empowerment prose". In January 2019 he took part as one of the speakers at the Rosa Luxemburg Conference in Berlin, sponsored by the left-wing daily Junge Welt , with the contribution "Socialism does not need a prophecy, it is made" . On May 3, 2019, Dath called in the FAZ to elect the DKP in the 2019 European elections .

poetics

Dath's understanding of poetry is also shaped by social policy: When asked about his poetics , the author replied that he wrote texts “that are not about how it is, but about how it should be, how it will hopefully not be or how it will be completely neutral could be. And those are speculative or fantastic texts. ”Dath describes the novel itself as an“ omnivorous form ”. In January 2020 Dath gave the Lichtenberg Poetics Lecture at the Georg-August-Universität Göttingen.

reception

The literary criticism called Dath a "hyperproductive author", a "thought and text generator" who explores the "possibilities of speaking" and who "does not count the limits of thought". Dath's novels were about "Darwin, Marx, Fantasy, Heavy Metal, Zombies and Genetic Engineering". In Simon Urban’s novel Plan D , Dath made a guest appearance as the East German Minister of Culture.
